Welcome
Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future. Michael Palin.
It is our aim to ensure that every pupil leaves Bishop Gore School with good knowledge of the world as it is now, with an appreciation of its past geographic history and with the understanding and motivation to find out how the world will change in the future and how we can be involved.
An essential part of geography is learning outside the classroom. Whether this means a walk around the school measuring microclimates, a trip to Swansea to conduct a settlement study or compare quality of life, being knee-deep in a river measuring its velocity, or experiencing the coastal erosion in Somerset, all outside work is extremely important to the department and we spend a lot of time preparing exciting and challenging fieldwork.

KS3
In Key Stage 3 we are constantly developing our curriculum to make it dynamic and relevant to the pupils we teach. For example, in Yr 7 we start our Geography with pupils’ perceptions of their local area and learn how to apply map skills within the school grounds while completing a ‘picture hunt’. We then broaden our approach and look at Swansea and Wales. We look at global issues that we are involved with on a local scale and compare it with global scale issues. Sustainability is investigated, with pupils researching how the school can become more sustainable.
During the rest of KS3 we look at various countries, issues affecting us all (e.g. climate change) and learn about natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanoes; in addition, we develop all the different skills needed to be a geographer, such as team work, fieldwork, numeracy, literacy, working with others, communication, ICT and graphicacy.
KS4
In KS4 we find out more about the challenges and opportunities the world offers.
We discover how people are using different environments, investigate the issues of sustainability and consider whether the Earth will still be able to provide us with all the resources we take for granted now. We learn how different landscapes developed, how population dynamics are changing and how this will affect all of us, and what really causes natural disasters and how people can cope with them.
KS5
In KS 5 the geography syllabus encourages independent study, giving students the skills that employers and universities want. They receive excellent support, including access to a dedicated Geography Subject Advisor through the Edexcel website. The course ensures that students are equipped for exploring topics relevant to the 21st century. This four-unit course offers units that allow a balance between students’ own particular physical, human and/or environmental interests and key geographical topics that provide them with the knowledge, understanding and skills for further study at higher education or for employment. Students follow two units at AS level – ‘World at Risk’ and ‘Going Global’, with a residential fieldtrip as part of their studies. At A2 students follow a range of topics from ‘Superpower Geographies’ to ‘The Technological Fix’.
