Mathematics is the means of looking at patterns that make up our world and the intricate and beautiful ways in which they are constructed. Numeracy is the means of making that knowledge useful.
Mathematics transcends cultural boundaries and its importance is universally recognised. Mathematics helps us to understand and change the world.
At Bishop Gore there are 8 full-time members of staff in the mathematics department, all of whom are very enthusiastic mathematicians.
Our core aim is to develop every pupil mathematically and this is demonstrated in our significantly improving GCSE results and our outstanding A/S and A-Level results.
The aims of the Maths department are:
•to develop, maintain and stimulate pupils’ curiosity, interest, confidence, perseverance and enjoyment in mathematics
•to develop the pupils’ knowledge and understanding of appropriate mathematical concepts, principles, methods and vocabulary
•to set challenging targets with high expectations for all pupils
•to offer a variety of approaches to teaching and learning to engage and motivate pupils and demand their active participation
•to develop the ability to reason logically, investigate & test hypotheses, classify and prove
•to develop an ability to apply mathematics in other subjects, in everyday situations and to appreciate the part mathematics plays in the world around them.
•to ease the transition for pupils between key stages and ensure progression in teaching and learning throughout their time at Bishop Gore School
•to explore enrichment opportunities outside the curriculum to enhance pupils’ enjoyment of mathematics.
